The Critical Importance of a Strategic Requirements Definition

erp Strategic Requirements

One of the major reasons that IT projects fail to deliver is that the requirements definition is inexact, fluffy and not strategically aligned – it is vital that it is aligned with the strategic essence, how the organization thrives and achieves maximum profitability.

In a recent article I discussed “The importance of strategic alignment in ERP, AI and other systems projects”.  This has a particular bearing on the requirements definition for any project and particularly for larger IT projects such as the procurement of an ERP, AI, CRM or other major IT system.

That said, a strategic requirements definition is vital for any project whether IT or other business project, albeit that it is more critical with IT projects because their deliverables are less tangible.

The overall strategic context is discussed in my article “Strategic Essence — The Missing Link in Integrated Business Information System Implementations”

Fundamentally this requires a crisp definition of the strategic essence of the organization – how it competes and how it thrives and achieves maximum profitability.

In its simplest form this involves the executive team, together with an experienced facilitator, developing the approximately seven “Critical Strategic Business Requirements” for the investment – the requirements that will deliver maximum strategic value and maximize the ability of the organization to thrive and maximize profits.

I have developed well proven methods of doing this, reply to this email to arrange a no obligation consultation.
